My tegos story: Jan

Hello, Jan, the saying ‘Off to pastures new’ is especially fitting in your case. We are delighted to have the opportunity to learn more about you today.

What’s your position at tegos?

Product Owner.

Since when have you been a tegosian?

Since July 2015. I joined as a software developer.

What does your job involve? Please describe it in simple terms.

I work in Operations. This is our product solution division for the waste and recycling industry that handles things such as weighbridge connection, scheduling, proof of waste disposal and chemical analysis. The product owner is a role within the agile software development system according to which we at tegos are organised and work. Personally, I see myself as something of a ‘class representative’ for the team. I basically serve as the interface to the other tegos teams (otherwise known as ‘squads’), to tegos partners and to customers regarding the requirements they have in terms of the Operations division’s product solutions.

You played a significant part in tegos opening a new office in Altenburg, Thuringia. How did that come about?

I was moving from the Ruhr region to Altenburg for personal reasons. Thanks to the high degree of flexibility offered at tegos, I was able to work from home when I moved to Altenburg, because at that time I was still a software developer. I travelled to Dortmund every few weeks to attend internal meetings and to visit customers. Overall, this model worked very well for me, and the geographical distance from the office in Dortmund had no impact on my work or my collaboration within the team. Then at the beginning of the year, I and our CEO Andreas came up with the idea of Altenburg not being merely the place where I worked from home, but of having an actual office there and of turning it into a ‘work base’ for other, new members of staff. Step by step, we then looked around for premises, set them up and began to hire new tegos employees. I am very excited about our first new developer starting to work here soon.

What project are you currently working on?

Our team (squad) is currently working on new and comprehensive mapping of the electronic record keeping procedure within our product solution, which will offer the circular economy and waste management the waste and recycling industry throughout the German-speaking world some major advantages and simplifications.

What brought you to tegos and what were you doing before?

I trained as an IT specialist for application development at a large tax consultancy company in Dortmund and was subsequently taken on as an employee there. This was the first time I had anything to do with developing and automating business processes, and I discovered I had a passion for it. After two years, I was keen to increase and expand my experience. I thought Microsoft Dynamics was great as a major ERP system, so I looked around specifically for companies in and around Dortmund that developed solutions based on this. tegos immediately appealed to me as a modern IT enterprise. I submitted a speculative application for a position as a developer and I was accepted.

What, in your opinion, is special about tegos and the tegosians?

In spite of the company’s size and structure with many branches all over the world, it nevertheless feels like you are working for a family-owned business. This is something that the associates convey to the teams too. The company reacts flexibly and individuals can influence the bigger picture, as wonderfully demonstrated by the story of the Altenburg office. There is simply a pleasant atmosphere and working here is fun.

 Which aspect of your job do you most enjoy?

The fact that, in my capacity as an interface and a coordinator, I can optimally advance the responsible product division in order that we can generate the best possible customer benefit.

And is there anything you don’t like? If so, what?

I only switched from being a developer to a product owner two months ago and this change in position involves so much which is new that so far there hasn’t been anything that I really haven’t liked. But one thing I can say is that if you as an employee feel like you are in a place where your work is no longer enjoyable, you simply need to talk to someone about it. The company will always find a way of making the work interesting again. As I already said, working at tegos feels like working as part of a family – we watch out for one another.

Based on your experience, what tips can you offer first-time employees for their careers?

You should choose vocational training or a study course in an area that you enjoy, that you believe in, and about which you could even say you would happily do it in your spare time as a hobby. Approach your career from this perspective. My own passion made my further development possible and got me to where I am today.

You have actively helped the next generation of IT workers in and around Altenburg. But we will talk about that in detail elsewhere.

What do you like to do in your free time? What are your personal interests?

When the weather is good, I like to go hiking or out for a bike ride.  And with so many lakes around here, I like to go swimming in the summer. I am also interested in and get a kick out of dealing in shares. Only ever using my own money, of course.
