The mark of a top employer even in times of crisis

The current coronavirus crisis is also a real test of a company’s culture. Employees can now see first hand how their employers treat them and the level of responsibility that their employers show for their workforce during times of crisis.  

The tegos Group received the TOP JOB Award 2020 at the end of February for being an outstanding employer. This seal of approval is official recognition of the workplace and value culture that has been in place at tegos for many years.  

And how does the situation look during these difficult times? Can tegos continue with this culture in times of crisis? The answer is: yes! 

To protect the company’s workforce, it was an easy decision for management to move the entire Dortmund headquarters to working from home two weeks before the official shutdown announced by the Federal Government. Work and communication has been continuing at pace since then through all communication channels. This is no problem for a company that has focused its structures on digital, agile working for many years.  

In addition, interaction with colleagues is continuing in the usual tegos manner. In place of the typical office kitchen, the virtual kitchen is now open for casual chats over a cup of coffee, while those who want to can meet up at online parties on Friday evenings. With their cameras turned on, the team can raise a glass or cup together. 

This is all very good, but how are things going from a business perspective? Here, too, management did not dither for long, but came up with clever solutions and took immediate action. A virtual staff meeting was called, where everybody was assured that there is a ‘We can do it’ attitude at tegos and that nobody will be left behind. This took place on 3 March 2020.  How many people were in a state of limbo or were still in a downward trajectory of professional and economic disorientation, fear and uncertainty? 

So, we can all be happy that we are tegosians! And what about the plans to expand our team and take on new employees? This certainly isn’t possible right now, is it? Actually, it is!  

We are still recruiting during these difficult times and have positions to offer for skilled candidates who have been rejected, laid off or put on waiting lists by other companies. 

We are also increasingly using digital technologies in our recruiting. A few days ago, we had a virtual final interview with all stakeholders. Transparency and communication with applicants are what really matter for us. With this in mind, even virtual recruiting processes are not a showstopper. 

And how did it go in this particular case? We were impressed by the candidate, and the candidate was impressed by us. So, there will soon be another tegosian amongst us. And what now? We will carry on. We have a lot more to do. 

Note: the ‘top employer’ label cannot be an empty phrase or simply be taken for granted. Instead, we need real values and qualities that are systematically practised at all levels of our company. We need a corporate culture that is firmly anchored in the minds of our employees, a culture of trust and a culture of being there for one another. And this should not just hold true during the good times, but also during times of crisis.
